Nicaragua Yoga Retreat Instructor: Autumn Adams, E-RYT

yoga-retreat-nicaragua-cloud-forest-autumn-adamsAutumn Adams, international yoga instructor and founder of Ambuja Yoga will be guiding the group through twice daily yoga sessions during the Nicaragua yoga retreat. You will receive individualized attention and see a progression in your asana practice over the course of the retreat. You will learn alignment and modifications to suit your practice.

Sunrise yoga will be an energizing hatha-vinyasa class concluding with savasana, pranayama and meditation. The morning class will prepare you for the day’s activites by awakening your body and senses.

Our Nicaragua evening classes will be a gentle flow that incorporates yin and restorative postures to nourish the body, mind and soul. Evening restorative practices will additionally relieve fatigue, tension, and stress with yoga nidra (yogic sleep) and meditation. Yoga nidra promotes deep healing and restoration; it also provides an opportunity to work with your sankalpa. Your sankalpa is an intention in accordance with the vibration of your being, your highest self. A yoga nidra practice plants the seeds of your sankalpa into the deepest recesses of your mind.

Be a conscious creator. Manifest your destiny.

Hiking & Birding at Finca Esperanza Verde

A Long Billed Hermit Hummingbird photographed by John Diener Research Curator of Ornithology at North Carolina Museum of Natural Science.

Hikers, birders, photographers, and nature lovers rejoice! Our Nicaragua Yoga Retreat invites all lovers of nature. Finca Esperanza Verde maintains miles of hiking trails that wind throughout the property past stunning vistas, a beautiful waterfall and swimming hole, and lush coffee plants. The canopy is rich with life here.

Along the trails there are multiple places to stop and take in the sights and sounds of the jungle (forest bathing), meditate, or read a book. Forest bathing, Shinrin-yoku, was developed in the 1980s in Japan and has become a cornerstone of healing and preventive health care in Japanese medicine. Forest bathing is the medicine of simply “being” in the forest. Finally, practicing Shinrin-yoku has been proven to lower stress levels, boost the immune system and help fight cancer.

During the retreat you are encouraged to spend your afternoons out on the trails, swimming under the waterfall or otherwise connecting with nature. The trails are all well-marked and excellently maintained (some of the best trails in Nicaragua). Head out on your own or grab a guide. While you are out on the trails you will see numerous species of birds, butterflies, and insects along with howler monkeys and if you’re lucky a sloth or two.

Our Exclusive Eco-Retreat in the mountains of Nicaraguanicaragua-yoga-retreat-at-finca-esperanza-verde

Some places “pull on your heart strings” and Finca Esperanza Verde EcoLodge is one of them. Owner’s Vivianne and Andrew have created a home away from home for travelers high in the mountains above Matagalpa. Finca Esperanza Verde, set in the cloud forest, above San Ramón, supports the local community by hiring a 100% local staff. The finca also maintains and supports La Chispa, an elementary school for local children on the property. Vivianne and Andrew promote continuing education and professional development for staff, and foster a women’s jewelry collective, Colectiva El Plomo.

Finca Esperanza Verde has truly embraced the meaning of being an ecolodge. The finca, a working coffee and vegetable farm, uses only responsible and sustainable methods of farming, 100% solar and hydro power electricity, a 100% carbon neutral thermo syphon system to heat water, vermiculture, composting, biodiverse landscaping, and fabulous farm-to-table meals. You will have the opportunity to enjoy Finca Esperanza’s fantastic coffee, grown and processed on site and feast on organic meals sourced from the farm’s  garden and nearby neighbors.

The Colibri , Tucan, and MotMot cabins have breathtaking views where you can watch the sunset behind the mountains as the sky begins its light show. Finca Esperanza Verde’s cabins are charming, simple and unfussy, allowing the surrounding landscape to rule the show. You will be welcomed warmly from the moment you arrive at FEV and before the week is over you will be plotting and scheming your return. We cannot wait to host you!

A Slower Pace of Life

You will quickly settle into the rhythm of life at Finca Esperanza Verde; sounds of the forest will lull you to sleep each evening and the howler monkeys will provide your morning wake up call. Your afternoons will be spent hiking and exploring with new friends that share similar visions and goals, cultivating gratitude for the simple and small things in your life, and discovering the types of relationships, friends and energy you want to surround yourself with when you get home.

Change your energy. Change your vibration.

Travel Insurance for our Nicaragua Yoga Retreat

Travel insurance is required for all international yoga retreats hosted by Ambuja Yoga including our Nicaragua yoga retreat. Many policies will help cover theft, travel delays, and evacuation should you need it. It may also protect you in case of trip cancellation due to illness or death of a family member. Here is a short blog post I wrote up about options for travel insurance for yoga retreats.

Nicaragua Visa Requirements

A visa is not required for most countries (including the US, Canada, and most European countries). Citizens of some countries do require a Visa On Arrival. All tourists are required to pay for a Tourist Card $10 USD upon arrival.

Reservations and Payment Policy for our Nicaragua Yoga Retreat

A 50% deposit holds your place for this retreat. Final payment must be received by January 10, 2017. Ambuja Yoga currently accepts Certified Cheques, Paypal, and Square. Reserve your space today!

If written Notice of Cancellation is received after January 1, 2017 there will be no refund granted.

Are tips and gratuities included?

Gratuity is not included. You are encouraged to bring USD in clean, crisp, untorn bills or Cordoba to tip resort staff. The staff at Finca Esperanza Verde works around the clock to ensure that your stay is perfect. Tipping is distributed equitably among the staff at FEV. A Tip/Propina box is mounted on the dining room/reception area wall for your convenience. Wondering how much is an appropriate tip? $20-50 USD is the average tip per person for the week and the amount is split among 9 employees.

Do I need to bring money for anything else?

You may like to bring cash to purchase alcoholic beverages, souvenirs (coffee, chocolate, jewelry?), and gratuity. Also make sure to bring $10 USD for the entrance fee into Nicaragua. This will be paid upon arrival at the airport.

Do I need a power adaptor?

There are no electrical outlets available in the cabins. To charge your batteries, phone or computer, we have an outlet off the kitchen for our guests. The charging station is powered by solar and hydro energy and supported by two 12V batteries with a conversion unit.  We ask that guests be mindful of their energy use while at the lodge.

Do I need to bring yoga props?

Mats, blocks and straps are available for your use. I encourage you to bring your own yoga mat and any additional props that you may use.

Is the drinking water in Nicaragua safe?

Tap water in most of Nicaragua is not safe for drinking. Finca Esperanza Verde has access to fantastic pure mountain spring water that is safe for drinking. Please bring a refillable water bottle to use throughout the retreat.

Is Nicaragua safe?

Yes, it is. Like in most parts of the world it is important to make intelligent choices. Finca Esperanza Verde is incredibly safe and the staff is warm and welcoming. If you will be spending time in any of the larger cities or along the coast prior to or after the retreat it is important to stay off of the beach after dark, to not take out more than you need at night, and to trust your instincts. If in doubt, ask a local/expat if it’s safe.

Weather in Nicaragua. What’s it like in February?

While the weather in most of Nicaragua is hot, hot, hot this time of year you will find the temperature at Finca Esperanza Verde to be wonderfully mild. Daytime temps between 75 and 85 Fahrenheit and nighttime temps in the 60s. February is in the middle of the Nicaraguan dry season. Finca Esperanza Verde sits in a lush valley and sees a bit more rain than other parts of the country. When the rest of Nicaragua turns brown Finca Esperanza Verde remains green.

Is there Wifi and Cell Service?

I encourage each guest to take this week to relax and unplug from their iPhones, computers, etc. However, Wifi is available in the communal dining areas at FEV, so you’ll be able to check in with loved ones, post to Facebook, Instagram and check email if necessary.

Cell service is available in Nicaragua and at Finca Esperanza Verde. Claro and Movistar are the main cell providers in Nicaragua and phones and minutes are cheap. If you will be bringing your own phone remember to check in with your phone company about roaming charges and international rates.

Money and Credit Cards

The official currency of Nicaragua is the Cordoba, although USD and Cordoba are used interchangeably. I suggest bringing a variety of US bills that are crisp and clean, no tears or marks (no one will take them, including the banks). Large bills are hard to change. ATMs are available at the airport in Managua. Most businesses do not accept credit/debit cards.

Things you may want to bring money for: alcoholic beverages, chocolate, souvenirs, gratuity, etc.

Immunizations for Nicaragua

Here are the recommendations from the CDC website for:

All travelers:
Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before every trip. These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, polio vaccine, and your yearly flu shot.

Most travelers:
The CDC recommends the Hepatitis A vaccine because you can get hepatitis A through contaminated food or water in Nicaragua, regardless of where you are eating or staying. The CDC also recommends getting the typhoid vaccine. You can get typhoid through contaminated food or water in Nicaragua. CDC recommends this vaccine for most travelers, especially if you are staying with friends or relatives, visiting smaller cities or rural areas, or if you are an adventurous eater.

Some travelers:
If you will be getting tattoos, engaging in sexual intercourse with a new partner or will be spending time around bats you may consider the following vaccines/prophylaxis treatment: hepatitis B, Antimalarials, and Rabies.

I’m new to yoga is this retreat appropriate for me?

Absolutely! And we’d love to have you. During yoga classes I will always offer modifications and variations to make asanas more accessible or more challenging. A basic understanding of vinyasa flow, including sun salutations, standing and balancing postures will make the classes infinitely more enjoyable for the new yogi. You are encouraged to take as many classes as you can from as many different teachers as you can before arriving.

I will also be available for private yoga lessons which are $65/60 minutes. Private yoga lessons are a great way to move deeper into your yoga practice, increase strength and flexibility, improve alignment and get hands-on one-on-one instruction. If you and your hubby/friend would like to share a private lesson it’s $65 for the first person and an additional $15 for each additional person (ex. 2 people = $80, 3 people = $95).

What should I pack for my Nicaragua yoga retreat?
